About The Role
The Staff Software Engineer for Build Stability at Gusto plays a pivotal role in enhancing the developer experience across the organization. This position involves owning and evolving the core Continuous Integration (CI) ecosystem, primarily built around Buildkite, to ensure it meets the scalability, performance, and reliability needs of a growing engineering team. The engineer will focus on optimizing build and test pipelines, reducing build times, and automating manual processes to accelerate delivery cycles. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, you will design and implement tools that improve developer workflows, monitor system health, and proactively address issues to maintain a stable and efficient CI environment. Qualifications
- 10+ years of professional software development experience
- Strong systems thinking and architectural design skills
- Proficiency in building and maintaining developer tooling for large engineering teams
- Experience with CI/CD systems, especially Buildkite or similar platforms
- Ability to communicate effectively across technical and non-technical teams
- Proven track record of improving developer productivity through infrastructure and tooling enhancements
- Experience in troubleshooting complex systems and implementing scalable solutions
- Familiarity with test automation, flaky test management, and build pipeline optimization
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to system health monitoring
- Manage, maintain, and enhance the core CI system to support the engineering organization's growth and needs
- Identify bottlenecks in build and test pipelines and implement solutions to improve speed and resource utilization
- Design, develop, and maintain developer workflow tools such as merge queues to ensure main branch stability and efficient code integration
- Develop and improve systems for detecting, quarantining, and reporting flaky tests to increase test suite reliability
- Build tools and services that enhance developer workflows, observability, and automation of manual tasks
- Partner with product engineering teams to understand their requirements and promote best practices in building and testing services
- Monitor the health of the CI platform, troubleshoot issues, and implement preventative measures to ensure system stability
- Proactively seek opportunities to optimize build infrastructure and improve developer experience
